FAA A&P Study Guide

A&P Written Practice Test

The FAA A&P written exams — General, Airframe, and Powerplant — are the first step toward earning your Airframe and Powerplant mechanic certificate. Each exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions with a 2-hour time limit, and you must score 70% or higher to pass. Proper preparation with realistic practice tests is essential for success.

Taking practice tests does more than assess your knowledge — it builds the test-taking skills you need under time pressure. You learn to pace yourself, eliminate wrong answers, and manage the specific format of FAA exam questions. The more practice tests you take, the more confident and efficient you become.

What Is on the A&P Written Exam?

The FAA A&P written exams are divided into three separate tests. The General exam covers foundational knowledge: regulations, maintenance publications, materials, weight and balance, and basic physics. The Airframe exam covers airframe structures, systems, and components. The Powerplant exam covers engine theory, systems, and maintenance. Each exam contains 100 questions drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for that subject area.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively

Start by taking a full-length practice test to establish your baseline score. Review every question you missed and understand why the correct answer is right and why the wrong answers are wrong. Then study the specific subjects where you are weakest, and take another practice test to measure improvement. Repeat this cycle until you consistently score above 80% — a good margin above the 70% passing score.

Practice Test Format

FAA A&P exam questions are multiple-choice with three options (A, B, C). The questions are practical and scenario-based rather than purely theoretical. Many questions ask you to identify a component, interpret a condition, or determine the correct maintenance procedure. Practice tests should mirror this format to be effective.
