FAA A&P Study Guide

A&P Study Questions

A&P study questions are the bridge between learning and testing. After reading about a topic and studying flashcards, study questions help you verify that you can actually apply the knowledge in an exam context. They are the difference between passive recognition and active recall.

The best A&P study questions are scenario-based, requiring you to apply knowledge to real maintenance situations — just like the FAA exam. They cover all three sections (General, Airframe, Powerplant) and every major subject area, with explanations that help you understand not just what the correct answer is, but why.

Types of A&P Study Questions

Study questions come in several formats: definition questions (What is X?), calculation questions (Given A and B, find C), identification questions (Which component is shown?), and scenario questions (Given this situation, what should you do?). The FAA exam uses all of these formats, so your study should include all types. Scenario questions are particularly valuable because they test applied knowledge, not just memorization.

Organizing Your Study Questions

Organize your study by category: General, Airframe, and Powerplant. Within each category, focus on one subject area at a time (e.g., electrical systems, then hydraulic systems). This allows you to build depth in one area before moving on. Track your scores by subject to identify where you need the most work.

Beyond Memorization: Understanding Concepts

The FAA exam tests understanding, not just memorization. While flashcards help you memorize facts and formulas, study questions test whether you can apply them. For each question, ask yourself: Why is this the correct answer? Why are the other options wrong? What would change in a slightly different scenario? This deeper engagement leads to better retention and better exam performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flashcards test recall of individual facts (e.g., "What is Ohm’s Law?"). Study questions test application of knowledge in an exam context (e.g., "If voltage is 12V and resistance is 4 ohms, what is the current?"). Both are important: flashcards build the knowledge base, study questions test whether you can apply it.
