Basic Physics Flashcards

Basic physics explains how aircraft systems behave under real-world conditions. As an A&P mechanic, you apply physics principles constantly — whether you are torquing a bolt, understanding hydraulic pressure, diagnosing an electrical fault, or explaining why an airfoil generates lift.

The FAA General exam tests your understanding of fundamental physics concepts including force, work, power, simple machines, friction, stress and strain, and the relationship between pressure, temperature, and volume. These concepts are not academic — they are the physical laws that govern every component on the aircraft.

What You Need to Know

  • Force = mass × acceleration (Newton’s Second Law)
  • Work = force × distance (measured in foot-pounds)
  • Power = work ÷ time (measured in horsepower; 1 HP = 550 ft-lb/sec)
  • Six simple machines: lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, screw, wedge
  • Stress = force ÷ area; types: tension, compression, shear, torsion, bending
  • Strain = deformation resulting from stress
  • Bernoulli’s principle: as fluid velocity increases, pressure decreases
  • Friction opposes motion; static friction exceeds kinetic friction

Why This Topic Appears on FAA Exams

Physics is tested because mechanics must understand the forces acting on aircraft structures and systems. If you do not understand stress and strain, you cannot inspect structural integrity. If you do not understand hydraulic principles, you cannot troubleshoot landing gear systems. The exam ensures you have this foundational knowledge.

Study Tips

Focus on understanding relationships rather than memorizing formulas. For example, understand that power is how fast work is done, not just the formula. When studying simple machines, think about where you encounter them on the aircraft — a bolt is a screw, a control column is a lever, a pulley system may control flight surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The exam covers basic physics concepts — force, work, power, simple machines, stress and strain, and basic fluid principles. You do not need calculus or advanced thermodynamics, but you must understand how these concepts apply to aircraft maintenance.
